Winter Flowers, Evergreen Foliage and Berries Mahonia

Mahonia is an excellent plant for bringing colour to the winter garden. Its bright yellow flowers appear from late autumn through early spring depending on species and variety, followed by dark blue berries.

Where to plant

Mahonia performs particularly well in partial or light shade.

It can tolerate relatively difficult conditions and works well in woodland-style gardens.

Care

Water new plants regularly.

Mulch annually.

Avoid unnecessary disturbance around the shallow root system.

When to prune

Prune after flowering.

How to prune

Remove dead and damaged stems.

If the shrub is becoming too large, remove the oldest stems at ground level.

Avoid simply cutting the entire plant to a uniform height.

For a particularly tall or bare specimen, rejuvenation can be carried out gradually over several seasons.
