Evergreen Flowers and Excellent Hedges Escallonia

Escallonia is an excellent evergreen shrub for hedging, screening and adding summer colour.

Its flowers can be pink, red or white and often continue appearing into autumn.

Where to plant

Escallonia likes sun and shelter, although it can tolerate some partial shade.

It is especially useful in coastal gardens and exposed areas.

Care

Water regularly while establishing.

Feed in spring if growth is weak.

Mulch annually.

When to prune

Prune after flowering, generally in late summer.

A light spring trim may also be appropriate for hedges, depending on the variety.

How to prune

Remove dead or damaged branches.

For established shrubs, remove a few older stems at ground level.

Shorten long shoots back to a healthy side branch.

For hedges, trim lightly to maintain a naturally tapered shape—slightly narrowerat the top than the base.
