Viburnum tinus is an exceptionally useful evergreen shrub. Its pinkish flower budsdevelop into clusters of white flowers from late winter into spring.

Where to plant

Grow Viburnum tinus in sun or partial shade.

It tolerates a variety of soils as long as drainage is reasonable.

It makes an excellent screening plant and is particularly useful in larger gardens.

Care

Water regularly during the first year.

Once established, it can cope with periods of dry weather, although wateringduring prolonged drought is beneficial.

Apply a mulch around the root zone in spring.

Prune after flowering, usually in spring.

How to prune

Remove dead and damaged branches.

Thin congested growth by removing selected older stems at ground level.

If the shrub is being grown as a hedge, trim lightly after flowering to maintain its shape.

Avoid excessive late-season pruning because this can reduce the following winter’s flowering.
